Deadlock’s Queen of Gambling

Among Deadlock’s playable roster, there is only one character who we can call a ‘boss’ from the criminal underworld of Cursed Apple. I am, of course, talking about Wraith, because Yamato does not control New York yet, and she has a lot to prove as the successor of her brother.

It’s also not like the game is devoid of other characters who work with the underground crime families, but none of them are like Wraith, who is at the forefront of New York’s gambling dens.

Thus making her a figure who is above the law and other criminals in terms of wealth and power. She considers herself a ‘female entrepreneur’ in a ‘male dominated industry’.

Wraith is addicted to the thrill of gambling

If you already are a Wraith player, then you very well know that gambling is like life and bloodline for her. That is because the risk of betting everything hits Wraith right in the nerves and makes her feel more alive than ever.

This aspect of her has also been translated into her gameplay, which makes playing Wraith really fun and unique. Her first ability in the game is called Card Trick, which passively allows her to pull random cards by dealing weapon damage.

Each type of card can then be thrown at the enemy for various effects, but then there is also the Joker card, which is like a wild card. A hand with multiple of them can guarantee kills if played right.

Being a master gambler, Wraith is always avoiding loopholes in her bets. This is revealed through her reason for participating in the ritual. She is possibly the only character who is in on this whole mess without an interesting wish to pitch to the patrons.

If successful, Wraith wants to keep her demands as simple as possible. Meaning, a basic wish that grants more wealth and power than she already has.

Lash and Wraith do not like each other

Aside from frequenting the poker tables, Wraith can also be found at the Bear Pit to bet on underground fights. This is also the place of origin for her conflicts with Lash, who is not fond of her for making bets on Bebop.

Wraith pushes it further by mocking Lash for losing to Bebop that ‘one time’ as we find out in their in-game conversations.

Deadlock has a lot of characters who use prosthetic arms, namely Shiv, Calico, and Grey Talon. Wraith also uses prosthetics, and two of them. But the crazy part is, unlike the others, she is not missing any arms. She uses prosthetics because she does not want her real arms to get dirty.

A fun fact about Wraith is that she is one of the few characters who has had multiple design iterations before Valve settled on the one that we see in-game currently. One of them was a magician who had been reinforced as a placeholder model for another character, Sinclair.

While she has pretty much settled for a final design iteration, we can’t say the same for some of the other characters in the cast, but hopefully, we will see them with remodels soon.
