News outlets in the New York of Deadlock

News outlets in the world of fiction have been quite a popular media trope for decades, with most of us being very familiar with some of the most iconic publications, like the Daily Bugle from Spider-Man and The Daily Planet from Superman.

These institutions help flesh out their respective worlds with additional lore tidbits whenever the writer deems necessary. In the world of Deadlock, there is a similar institution that has been helping us learn more about the Cursed Apple through bits and pieces of lore.

As the game is currently still in development, most of the characters have incomplete backstories and mismatched designs. So it is not easy to piece together what is actually going on during the second Maelstrom event.

This is where the New York Oracle comes in. The in-universe newspaper publication, which has been drip-feeding fans information about everything that has been going on inside as well as outside the three lanes of the Cursed Apple.

The New York Oracle building stands tall in mid lane

Just like Hotel Baroness, which stands tall in the middle of the streets, the office Building of New York Oracle can also be found right in the middle of the game’s map.

But due to the ongoing supernatural event that has garnered the attention of the Patrons, the streets have become dangerous. So it seems like the building has been evacuated, and what’s left are just some small Denizen camps.

If we have learned one thing from real-world journalism, it’s that news reporting rarely has the luxury to wait for things to get less dangerous. The Oracle keeps up with that tradition by broadcasting news through the radio in stalls spread throughout the game.

These Newsstands utilize the models and designs of the in-game shopkeeper with a few basic changes.

Allie Kinkaid is one of the journalists from the New York Oracle

News portals are as good as the journalists helming them; throughout fiction, we have seen this ring true through characters such as Ben Urich from Marvel Comics and Tintin from The Adventures of Tintin.

The New York Oracle has someone similar, named Allie Kinkaid, who has been at the forefront amidst all the life-threatening events going on around the City. Currently, the only piece of information we have about her is that she is interviewing the dangerous criminal and playable character, Seven.

Much of what we know about the character and his motivations to take part in the ritual is all information that’s been revealed through Allie Kinkaid’s interview with him.

Aside from events specific to New York, The Oracle also reports on things that have been going on in the world outside. Some of which relate to our real-world events from the time period, such as the passing of famous illusionist, Harry Houdini.
