Lucky Pokemon in Pokemon GO are unique variants that can be hard to come by unless you know the process of getting them. Unlike usual rare and special pocket monsters that you can come across in the wild or raids, this one can only be gathered through trading.
But trading doesn’t guarantee a Lucky Pokemon. There are a few things to keep in mind while looking for this unique variant in Pokemon GO. We discuss the same in detail in this article.
Complete guide to getting Lucky Pokemon in Pokemon GO
While trading, a Pokemon has a 5% chance of becoming a Lucky Pokemon. This percentage is affected by how long the trainer has had that Pokemon. Older Pokemon will have a higher chance.
According to the Pokemon GO wiki, the reported odds are as follows:
Age | Lucky Pokemon Probability |
---|---|
<1 year | 5% |
1 year | 10% |
2 years | 15% |
3+ years | 20% |
Currently, there are two guaranteed ways to get a Lucky Pokemon in-game. They are as follows:
- Trading with a Lucky Friend will always result in a Lucky Pokemon. A Lucky Friend is an upgraded variant of an in-game Best Friend. It is speculated that there’s a 1.17% chance that Best Friends will become Lucky Friends upon the first in-game interaction of the day. The next trade with a Lucky Friend will result in a guaranteed Lucky Pokemon.
- After September 5, 2018, Niantic announced another guaranteed way of getting Lucky Pokemon in-game. One of the traded Pokemon needs to be caught between July 2016 and August 2016, and neither of the traders should have received 10 or more Lucky Pokemon previously.
What are Lucky Pokemon in Pokemon GO?

Lucky Pokemon boast minimum IVs of 12/12/12. They also require half Stardust than usual to power up. These make them a desirable addition to anyone’s battle party. Before September 5, 2018, Lucky Pokemon had a minimum IV of 10/10/10.
Visually, they have a gold glowing backdrop in the Pokemon card in-game. They also have a label beneath their name mentioning their lucky status.
