Fresh off the heels of the PlayStation 5 Pro announcement, we finally concluded the PlayStation State of Play scheduled for September. Like every time, we had announcements and new information for existing video games like Monster Hunter Wilds.
It had some surprising reveals that caught me and possibly many gamers off-guard. So, if you live in a part of the world where the showcase occurred in a god-awful hour, and you didn’t have the time to catch the live stream, here’s everything important revealed in today’s PlayStation State of Play.
Important announcements in the September PlayStation State of Play
So, let’s first talk about the essential thing—the reveals. There were a handful of them, and some surprised me. So, here are the things that were announced today that caught me off-guard and were a pleasant surprise.
1. Ghost of Yotei
The first major announcement came right at the end of the State of Play, in the form of Ghost of Yotei, an open-world action-adventure game and the sequel to Ghost of Tsushima. It takes place in 1603, some 300 years after Ghost of Tsushima, and features a brand-new protagonist.
You get a glimpse at the brand-new region, some new combat stances to the character, guns, and, yes, wolves. The trailer had a slight feel of a Wild West set in feudal Japan and the gorgeous visuals the series is known for. The game launches next year, in 2025, for PlayStation 5.
2. We finally have the release date for Monster Hunter Wilds
I think my colleagues here at Backdash will be extremely ecstatic to wake up to the news that Monster Hunter Wilds will finally launch on February 28, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. And, to accompany the release date, we have another brand-new trailer!
This trailer for State of Play once again gave us some story synopsis for this entry, a brand-new look at a water biome map, some glimpse at new monsters, and possibly our first look at the big bad monster for this entry. And yes, we also got our first look at the cover art for the game!
3. Our first look at The Lake House DLC for Alan Wake 2
We finally had our first look at the second and possibly the final DLC for Alan Wake 2, The Lake House. This time, the DLC will take us back to a Federal Bureau of Control facility in Bright Falls, near the lake. However, this is Alan Wake, and evil forces overrun the facility.
The announcement was equal parts weird and equal parts creepy, which is typical for Alan Wake. It launches in October for every expansion pass holder and is sold separately as a DLC.
4. More Dragon Age: The Veilguard goodness
Before its October 30, 2024, release date, Bioware showcased some more gameplay of Dragon Age: The Veilguard at the State of Play. This time, we see the player character and their two companions fighting a Blighted Dragon, giving us a glimpse at its new combat system. And I won’t lie, it looks fun!
5. 2B joining Stellar Blade
If something fails to faze me in video game announcements, it is the inclusion of 2B from Nier Automata in any games out there. And unsurprisingly, she is joining Stellar Blade through a collaboration. My guess is a skin for the main character, but we shall see that soon enough.
And yes, Stellar Blade is finally getting a photo mode. So, all the passionate gamers can take some gamer-worthy pictures of the main character.
6. Palworld launching on PlayStation
Another surprising reveal in the State of Play was Palworld finally launching for PlayStation 5. While Pocketpair is a little busy locking horns with Nintendo in a litigation battle, that hasn’t stopped them from bringing the Pal goodness to PlayStation gamers. And you can go ahead and buy the game right now!
7. Raziel Returns in remastered goodness!
Okay, technically, this wasn’t a surprise in the State of Play, seeing this was earlier leaked before the event. However, yes, Raziel is returning after more than 20 years, looking pretty beautiful in new visuals. Unfortunately, he still doesn’t have a mouth.
Other announcements at the PlayStation State of Play
Outside of the jucier announcements, there were some other noteworthy games showcased in Sony’s State of Play, which grabbed the attention. Here are the rest of them:
- The first reveal of Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered, launching on 31 October 2024, for PC and PlayStation 5.
- Lego Horizon Adventures will launch on 14 November 2024 for PC and PlayStation 5.
- A remastered trailer of PlayStation 5 Pro, which still doesn’t convince me to shell out $850+.
- Some new DualSense controller reveals.
- Dynasty Warriors: Origins will launch on January 17, 2025.
- The first look at a brand-new Fantasy action game named ArcheAge Chronicles.
- A creepy third-person action game named Hell is Us reveals itself for the first time.
- A brand-new survival crafting game named Towers of Aghasba will launch in early access in November 2024.
- A rather cool-looking clay-animation adventure game named The Midnight Walk.
- Metro Awakening showcases some more gameplay and Hitman VR launching for PS VR2.
- Astro Bot getting its first DLC, which is free and will feature 10 new bots, 5 new online speedrun levels, etc.
- TMNT Shredder’s Revenge gets a brand-new DLC, adding Mona Lisa and Mondo Gecko as playable characters. The DLC is out today!
- Hironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of Final Fantasy, finally reveals the release date of Fantasian Neo Dimension, a JRPG that launches on December 5, 2024.
- Lunar Remastered Collection officially drops a reveal and will launch in Spring 2025.
- LEGO Fortnite is getting a Splitscreen mode on PlayStation and a limited edition DualSense controller.
Overall, the State of Play was rather decent, showcasing many great games. It certainly improved over the previous State of Play, making me excited to try out most of today’s reveals.
You know what would’ve been even more exciting? A Bloodborne remaster reveal and PC launch. When is that happening PlayStation? Will you do it after the Bloodborne emulation does a great job on PC? These are questions we’ll probably never get an answer to.
