Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates can be credited for a lot of things, including being a pioneer of the microcomputer revolution back in 1970. The philanthropist is one of the wealthiest people alive to this day, owning a large stake in Microsoft and its related products.
He eventually met and married Melinda French, after dating for around 6 years. They were married on January 1, 1994 – until eventually agreeing to a mutual separation after nearly 37 years of marriage.
There were talks of a divorce back in 2019, which ultimately culminated in an actual divorce on August 2, 2021.
After years of silence, both partners have seemed to open up about the divorce, with two very different responses. Bill Gates responded to the same in a rather recent interview with NBC Today.
The interview was regarding his upcoming book, Source Code. Elaborating further on the matter, he called his divorce as one of his biggest regrets. He went on to say that the divorce wasn’t ‘great’, and mentioned that he would still ‘do it again’ – referring to his lack of confidence in the outcome.
The divorce wasn’t great. Having those three kids, the work we were able to do together – even if I knew that it wouldn’t last forever, I would still do it again.
On the other hand, Melinda Gates called the divorce as something necessary. The now philanthropist expressed a certain degree of shock at Bill Gates’ statements, remarking that she didn’t know what to make of it.
I don’t even quite know what to make of that statement, so I’m not going to comment on what he says.
Mrs Gates also spoke up on the divorce, mentioning that it was quite the ordeal. She also faced numerous panic attacks during the divorce proceedings. After all, leaving a long marriage is not an easy task.
Regardless, both have seemed to have moved on and are living their own, separate lives.
