The Unfriendly Competition Quest is one of the many side quests in The Elder Scrolls Oblivion Remastered, that you can explore if you’re tired of the main storyline.
Just like most of the side quests in Skyrim, Unfriendly Competition has a really powerful weapon named Calliben’s Grim Retort as a lootable weapon.
While you have an option to unlock this weapon using console commands, it’s best if you play through the different quests as intended, for an immersive experience.
How to start the Unfriendly Competition quest in The Elder Scrolls Oblivion Remastered
To start the Unfriendly Competition quest, you’ll have to make your way to the Market District in the Imperial City and then talk to one of the three merchants to kickstart this quest:
- Tertullian Verus (Three Brothers Trade Goods)
- Claudette Perrick (The Gilded Carafe)
- Ogier Georick (The Main Ingredient)
Speaking to any one of them will send you towards Jensine, who will give you a full rundown of what’s been happening so far, and will ask you to investigate another merchant Thoronir.
Where to find Thoronir in Oblivion Remastered
You’ll find Thoronir at Copius Coinpurse in the Marketing District in the Imperial City. Although you’ll find the store whenever you go there, you’ll only be able to talk to Thoronir if you go within 8 AM to 7 PM.
Visit the store within the given timeframe and speak to him. Once you’ve exhausted all the dialogue, head outside the shop and wait till he leaves the establishment at around 7 PM.
When Thoronir exits Copius Coinpurse, follow him till Merchants Inn. He’ll leave this place at around 11 PM, and then head to a stone compound with a huge well in the middle.
Once you’ve followed him to this place, hide in the bushes but don’t go too far otherwise you won’t be able to eavesdrop on the conversation that is about to happen. Thoronir will meet a man called Agarim, who’s apparently been supplying him with the goods, leading to the dirt cheap prices.
Where to find the Macabre Manifest in Oblivion Remastered
After you’ve eavesdropped on Thoronir and Agarim, follow the latter to his house in the Talos District. Once you’ve located his house, wait for him to leave the facility so that you can explore it in peace.
When the house is finally empty, you’ll be able to use your lockpicks to get inside. Alternatively, you can also use the Skeleton Key to make your life easier.
The Macabre Manifest is in the basement of this house. Collect it, and make your way back to Thoronir for a confrontation. He will claim to be innocent and will send you after Agamir, towards the Trentius Family Mausoleum.
How to get Calliben’s Grim Retort in Oblivion Remastered
Inside the Trentius Family Mausoleum, you’ll be confronted by Agamir and an armored guard. The only way to progress the Unfriendly Competition quest is by defeating them.
Once you’ve done so, search Agamir’s body and pick up the Debaser, which drains Willpower and Endurance from enemies on every hit. With this sword in hand, look around the Mausoleum for a stone coffin.
Behind this coffin to the left is a grave which contains the Calliben’s Grim Retort, an Elven Mace, in Oblivion Remastered.
With this weapon recovered, make your way to the broken grave and pick up the muddy shovel. Head back to Thoronir and then to Jensine to finally complete the Unfriendly Competition questline in Oblivion Remastered.
