In Deadlock, we find a lot of characters who are trying to reform themselves from their past lives. Shiv is trying his best to prove himself as a newcomer in the Baxter society. The Doorman is trying to live among mortals, rejecting his inhumane past.
Then there is Calico, who is trying to do the reverse. Once a respected member of the Baxter society, she’s now turned into a cold assassin for hire. Calico found that she could make s more money if she switched professions to a professional killer.
Monster Hunting may be a necessary job in the world of Deadlock due to the abundance of supernatural entities, originating after the Maelstrom events. But keeping them under control isn’t really a high paying job; most just do it for the love of the game.

Calico is the Black Sheep of the Baxter Society
The rest of the Baxter Society Calico is looked at as a traitor by the rest of the Baxter society for leaving the association and resorting to the life of a killer, influenced by greed. We get a hint of this from conversations between her and the founding member of the society, Grey Talon.
Originally released as a Hero Labs character, Calico was eventually added to the game as a regular roster mainstay in January of 2025. Prior to all of that, she was a different character named Nano during Deadlock’s Neon Prime era.

Calico was a black market arms dealer from Cursed Apple in her earlier iteration. But that got changed when Deadlock finally went into closed alpha. The new backstory turned her into a more compelling character.
Scotland Yard and Interpol are trying to hunt Calico
Which brings us to her relation with the Fairfaxes. She was hired by Maximillian Fairfax to assassinate the heir to his throne. But as luck would have it, Arin Fairfax survived the attempt after Calico’s bullet missed their heart, thus not fatally wounding them.
The news of her failed assassination attempt spread quickly throughout the network of hired killers, thus earning her notoriety for being sloppy at work. This is why she wants to participate in the ritual.

Not just for wealth and protection from the forces, such as Scotland Yard and Interpol, that are trying to hunt her down. But also because she wants to prove her prowess as an assassin by killing one of the patrons.
Besides that, Calico also wants to tie up loose ends with Maximillian Fairfax and kill Airn, or Pocket, during the ritual. We get to learn about this from one of her dialogues if she gets a kill on Pocket. One fun fact about Calico is that her gameplay style closely resembles Broodmother from Dota, as it was inspired by her.
